Havre Softball Wins Two Games Saturday at Divisionals

The Havre softball team closed out the Eastern ‘A’ Divisional Tournament with two victories on Saturday, solidifying the No. 3 seed in next week’s state tournament. The Blue Ponies beat two conference rivals, tournament hosts Fergus, (8-3), and then Dawson County, (11-1) with the run rule in effect.

Game one featured Elle Verploegen in the circle once again as she struck out 10 Golden Eagles batters in a complete game. Havre was able to help her out before she even took the field as her teammates knocked in four runs in the top of the first inning. After the first three batters reached base, catcher Camille Keeley singled in two Ponies with the next two runs coming on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball.

Both teams traded runs in the middle innings and after a Golden Eagles comeback in the fifth that had them down, (5-3), center fielder Jersi Morse clubbed a two-run home run in the next half inning, her fourth of the season. She then doubled to bring in a run in the seventh to cap off her three-hit and three-RBI outing. Keeley also recorded three hits in the contest.

It was more of the same for Havre softball in the second game as the Blue Ponies were up (7-0) before Dawson got a run on the board. Keeley smacked two home runs, a solo shot in the fourth and a three-run dinger in the sixth. She now has nine home runs on the 2024 season.

Morse, right fielder Rachel Jette, and infielder Bree Hanson, each had multi-hit games with Jette and Keeley driving in seven of the 11 runs scored for the Blue Ponies. The day started with Verploegen in the circle and also ended with her there as she tossed a carbon copy strikeout outing with 10 K’s of Red Devils in six innings.

Havre softball (18-7) is now the No.3 seed out of the Eastern Region at next week’s state tournament in Billings. The Ponies will face the No. 6 seed from the west, Hamilton at 1pm this Thursday.
