MSU-Northern Cross Country Ranked in Top 25 For First Time in Program History

HAVRE, MONT – The MSU-Northern Men’s Cross Country team made history Thursday, November 19th. For the first time in the six year history of the program they cracked the NAIA top 25 rankings. The Lights came in at number 25 in the nation.

Coach Chad Spangler sheds some insight on how they were able to accomplish becoming ranked saying “Montana Tech was ranked in the top 25 in the first coaches poll this year. So when we beat them at Conference Championships I was thinking we had a chance. I was hoping they would look back at how we finished last season. We got some votes at the end of last season so we were getting close, and I felt like we finished strong this year and got respect from the raters.”

Coach Spangler says his team runners have honed their skills this year through a great deal of adversity. “They trained so hard this summer, and all fall despite all the uncertainty. I can’t say enough about some of the newcomers. We got some new guys from the Hi-Line who stepped and really put us into position to finish the way did.”

Two other Frontier Conference teams are ranked in the poll with Rocky Mountain 13th and Carroll College 17th.

The Lights Cross Country team will be in the field at the NAIA National Cross Country Championship meet in April of 2021.
