The Havre Boys’ basketball team has been enjoying a (5-1) start to their season. New Media Broadcasters talked with Ponies coach WaLynn Burgess about the team’s depth and how that has guided them to the success they’ve had so far this season.
“We feel like we can throw nine or ten guys out there that can score at any point in time,” Burgess said. “It’s a luxury having that at the same time to keep fresh legs compared to some teams that are maybe five or six (players) deep.”
“The progress we’ve made; we’ve had some younger kids come through that have started proving that they can get on the floor and some of our older kids that have been around that are part of the system,” Burgess continued. “They just keep bringing those young ones along.”
The legacy that has been built under coach Burgess at Havre High can be seen in the vision he has for each team he puts out on the floor. He shared that this season’s team might not be the most intimidating, but can beat other teams soundly in different ways.
“You look at (our team) and you wouldn’t think we’d be that good,” Burgess said. “We’re a bunch of short guys running around out there and (the players) just play with a lot of heart. They play (great) together right now. The chemistry is going really well for the early season.”
“We always preach about taking great shots, not settling for good ones,” Burgess said. “I feel like the boys are really taking to that mantra. We know that going forward, we’re going to have a lot of work to do, but we’ve liked where we’ve started for sure.”
The Blue Ponies boys’ basketball team is set to resume the season on Fri, Jan. 5 at Hardin followed by a game in Custer County at Miles City the next day. Stay tuned next week to New Media Broadcasters for more information on those upcoming contests.
