(NMB) Mother Nature played her hand in the Havre Blue Pony Football season opener Friday, ending the game against the Whitefish Bulldogs in a no contest after a lightning delay.
Havre started off on a 3 play opening drive to move up 7-0 after the opening kickoff. One play after the following kickoff, Whitefish tied things up on a 60 yard pass play. The Ponies would notch another touchdown after Teegan Solomon picked up a fumble on the Havre 1 yard line and running 99 yards for the score.
Havre found the end zone again on a one yard punch in at about 2 minutes into the second quarter. With 3 and a half minutes remaining in the half, the first lightning strike caused a 30 minute delay.
According to guidelines, once lightning is found in a 10 mile radius of a game in progress, play is suspended for 30 minutes. The clock restarts at 30 minutes with each subsequent strike.
At about 9:25p, the game was officially called a no contest, with Havre holding the 21-7 lead.
