The Havre Track and Field teams have been performing at a level that could push to new heights in the coming weeks. For now, the teams have continued to dominate the meets that have been scheduled for the 2024 season.
New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Kari Filius and she touched on weather conditions that the team faced last Saturday in East Helena and said that the attitude displayed by the adversity was the reason they came away with so much success.
“They’re just learning to compete,” Filius said. “The weather wasn’t too good (last weekend) down there.”
“They just faced adversity and still come out with pretty good times and pretty good places,” Filius continued. “It’s nice to see that they can still get their mental right and compete and not make excuses, so I think they’re getting better at that.”
The Blue Ponies have performed well when coming off of one meet and essentially straight into another, which is what the team did on Monday in Glasgow. Filius said that because of the level of competition in which the Norm Girard Meet presents every season, her team had to meet the moment and that’s exactly what the squads did.
“That’s a really good meet because it is the best kids in the area,” Filius said. “That’s a good meet to get some (personal records) and really fine tune things.”
“We had a lot of first places on the boys’ and girls’ side,” Filius continued. “A lot of top-four finishes and they get medals at that meet, so they were pretty excited about it.”
“(The) relay teams performed well,” Filius said. “We had really close to records being broken at that meet. We rose to the level of the competition and that’s good to see as we get towards the end of the season.”
Now comes the penultimate meet for Havre before the regular season wraps. The Havre Lions meet will be the time to honor the backbone of the success from 2024; the senior class. Coach Filius wants her team to go out and continue to maintain its pace, but knows that there will be an extra special meaning because of the individuals who are having their last go-round in front of the home crowd.
“Another track meet to try to get a better start or have a better handoff or just fine tuning some things because it is the end of the regular season,” Filius said.
“It is our senior night, too,” Filius continued. “We have 20 seniors. So it will be fun to perform at home and have a good sendoff for those seniors.”
The Havre Lions meet will commence around 9am on Saturday and New Media Broadcasters will have results once they become available.
