The MSU-Northern Lights basketball team (5-2) has its home opener on Saturday night. Their opponent will be the Concordia University Edmonton Thunder (4-6). New Media Broadcasters sat down with Lights coach Shawn Huse and he broke down what he has seen from the Thunder on film heading into their matchup this weekend.
“They’ve had some big wins this year,” Huse said. “They’re going to be a handful (and) they’re a very good basketball team.”
“They play well together,” Huse continued. “They’ve got a couple of guards from California (as well as) bigs that can step out and shoot.”
“This is going to be a good test for us (to come) back (and play) at home and we have to be ready to go for these guys,” Huse said.
The Lights will have their home opener after playing the first seven games on the road. Coach Huse said what makes it so special to play in front of the fans who pack the Armory Gym every game.
“(We have o)ur fan base in general (and) all the people that come to our games and support us and get behind us,” Huse said. “When we’re out recruiting, if not the first thing we’re bringing up, it’s pretty close. It’s just because of the support we get and the way our gym is designed.”
“We’re in close games and (it) feels like you’re just heavy lifting the whole way and sometimes, (the fans) can get you over the hump,” Huse continued.
Tipoff between Concordia Edmonton and MSU-Northern is scheduled for around 7pm following the conclusion of the Skylights’ basketball game.
