(Missoula) A new effort out of Missoula to save bears and humans has it’s first phase now in effect via both city and county ordinance in those counties.
The new regulations will require areas that labeled “Bear Buffer Zones” to use trash cans that bears can’t break into. This was already in place for some areas, but the code was amended last fall to also cover city areas.
The reason for this, the city says, it discourage bears from considering city areas as a place where they can find easy food, as that causes the bears to come closer to humans, which can then result in altercations resulting in the animal having to be euthanized.
