It was a sweep on the day for the MSU-Northern basketball programs, taking down Ambrose University on Thursday afternoon. The Skylights beat the Lady Lions, (84-40), while the Lights cruised to a (83-55) victory.
For the Skylights (5-7), they led wire-to-wire and were able to achieve coach Chris Mouat’s vision of shooting over 45 percent from the floor and over 80 percent from the free throw line. The Skylights were able to take advantage of a shorthanded Ambrose team by dominating points in the paint, (52-14) and total rebounds, (47-26). Junior forward Shyann Krass led the way for the Skylights with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. She was one of four lights in double-figures along with redshirt junior forward Savannah Toms’ 18, senior wing Dulci Skunkcap’s 13, and sophomore guard Taya Trottier’s 10.
For the Lights (8-5), there were a couple of lead changes at the beginning of the contest, but they were able to jump out to a (52-18) lead by halftime. Northern forced 20 Lions turnover and capitalized with 24 points off of those turnovers. Senior guard Zack Martinez came out firing with 17 first-half points and finished with 24 in the contest. He also only missed three shots from the floor. Like the Skylights, the Lights also had four double-digit scorers, which included redshirt freshman guard RJ Ramone and junior forward Jake Randall each having 13 points as well as redshirt freshman forward Oskar Pula putting in 12.
The Lights and Skylights will close out their non-conference schedule with games on Saturday against Lakeland College. Catch those games on KPQX 92.5FM as the Skylights will tip off at 12pm and the Lights will follow.
