The MSU-Northern Skylights basketball team is in the midst of its second winning streak of the Frontier Conference season. New Media Broadcasters talked with head coach Chris Mouat after Saturday’s win against Montana Western and he looked back on how this momentum started.
“I think things honestly started for us at Carroll,” Mouat said. “Despite a score that showed we didn’t play very good, that’s not the case.”
“We went down there and played a top-5 team in the country leading the game going into the fourth quarter and we just kind of melted down,” Mouat continued. “We just try to keep the positives from that game as far as our rebounding and moving the ball.”
“We did that heading into Butte and that was just a hard-fought game,” Mouat said. “Then we got home at 2 in the morning and were at practice the next day.”
Mouat was asked how these latest results can translate to the near future and he said his squad is evolving every day.
“I think the biggest thing at this stage of the year is giving your kids some rest and also adding some new things,” Mouat said. “We like to sprinkle in a few new things to keep it fresh and throw show the other team something they haven’t seen.”
“At the end of the day, we were very simple (against Western), which I thought needed to be the plan,” Mouat continued. “To shoot a team percentage of 57 (percent from the floor), you’re going to be in a lot of games doing that. That’s been tough for us in a few games. Even in a couple games that we’ve won, the shooting percentage has been down.”
“To see the ball go in the hole (and) put points on the board, that was fun,” Mouat said.
The Skylights will play Rocky Mountain College at home followed by a ranked Providence squad on the road. Stay tuned later this week for conversations with coach Mouat about those topics.
