FORT BELKNAP, Mont. (NMB) – The National Weather Service says that a weak tornado briefly touched down on the Fort Belknap Reservation on Tuesday evening.

The tornado is believed to have only been the ground for a few minutes shortly after 6 pm. It touched down 5-7 miles west northwest of Hays, a few miles west of Montana Highway 66.

The entire time the tornado was on the ground, it was in open ranch land, so no damage to structures was caused.

Since there was not damage, the Weather Service will not be sending out a survey crew to give the tornado an official intensity ranking, but it was believed to be weak.

There were also reports of golf ball sized hail with the storm.

Fort Belknap Disaster and Emergency Services says that as of Wednesday afternoon, there had not been any reports of damage from the storm.
