The Havre Northstars baseball team opened up the season at home on Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd at American Legion Field. The gray conditions and high winds played a part in the Northstars results, falling in a doubleheader to the Great Falls Chargers, (6-0) and (2-0).
In game one, Havre was held to two hits, including one each from shortstop Ezra Pyle and second baseman Tyson Brandon. Center Fielder Colter Solomon and designated hitter Jevin Jenkins each got on base and stole a bag. Terek Shipp started the game for coach Patch Wirtzberger’s squad, but Quinn Elliot finished it as he struck out five Chargers over 3.2 innings.
Game two was a pitcher’s dual with the teams combining for five total hits. Tanner Delarosa got the ball this time and pitched well, allowing two runs over six innings, striking out eight batters and giving up only one walk and two hits. Great Falls scored runs on a fielder’s choice and a single. Elliot played the field this time and as a shortstop recorded one of the two Northstars hits along with Jenkins, who got the other single.
Havre will have one week off before playing right back at American Legion Park on Mother’s Day against the Lewistown Redbirds. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
