(Montana) President Donald Trump announced that 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports began Tuesday, sparking concern among Montana grain growers.
Local farmers are particularly worried about the impact on production costs, as many materials used in farming, such as fertilizer, are imported from Canada.
Nathan Keane, secretary for the National Association of Wheat Growers, spoke to NonStop Local earlier this week
“It’s going to be tough to make a profit on wheat this year if we are facing tariffs that are going to drive up our costs” said Keane.
As well as a comment form Klayton Lohr, President of the Montana Grain Growers Association, who says that during previous tariffs, government funds were required for farmers to break even.
“When you start being made whole, from a direct government payment, the general public points at you and says well you’re just a welfare taker, but at the same time, we wouldn’t be in business without those.” said Lohr.
