Big Sandy Girls’ Basketball Heading to State

The Big Sandy girls’ basketball team clinched a spot in the MHSA Class ‘C’ Basketball Tournament next week after beating Denton-Geyser-Stanford-Geraldine in a challenge game on Monday night. New Media Broadcasters caught up after the game with the head coach of the Lady Pioneers, Travis Baumann. He was able to reflect on the run his team has had so far going all the way back to the 9C tournament in Havre two weeks ago.

“We’ve run into some difficult ways of deciding to get to the state tournament,” Baumann said. “(We played in) the consolation (game) at districts, playing four games there and then coming in (last) Wednesday, playing in the play-in game and working our way back through. This (was) our tenth game in 12 days.”

“It just shows you the heart and the amount of grit that these girls have and how hard they work,” Baumann continued.

Baumann shared a story about how after districts, his team ended up coming together after getting back to Big Sandy and were able to use that time to make this run to clinch a state berth.

“We got back home and we went to the gym and we sat in a circle, the whole team,” Baumann said. “We just had conversations about how we were going to change and how we were going to be different.”

“Be it knowing that we do belong here and just because we were the three-seed doesn’t mean we are not a good team,” Baumann continued. “It gave us a lot of confidence and we came back and have just been playing great ever since.”

The Big Sandy girls will open up state tournament play on March 7 when they face the champions of the Western ‘C’, Twin Bridges. The game will be taking place at around 1:30pm from the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls and New Media Broadcasters will bring you coverage.
