Chinook Continuing Run into Divisionals Starting Tonight

The Chinook boys’ basketball team won three games in the 2023-24 regular season and were on the outside looking in for postseason play. The story got turned upside down when the Beeters won two games at the District 1B tournament over the weekend and qualified for Divisionals this coming week with the signature moment beating Rocky Boy on Saturday, (69-67). New Media Broadcasters spoke with Chinook coach Bill Bell and he said there was one word that has started off this magical run: belief.

“I always believed that we could do it,” Bell said. “It just took the whole team to believe in themselves.”

“If we could come together that we could accomplish what we did accomplish, so I’m proud of them for doing that,” Bell continued.

The dream season will continue in Malta. If Chinook is going to pull off another upset, they will have to do so against the host team in the Mustangs, who are (18-2) on the season and have gotten wins over tournament teams from other class schools, including Class ‘A’ Havre and Class ‘C’ Roy-Winifred. Coach Bell said what the makeup of his team’s opponent is and what the preparation is like for this week.

“I do know they’re probably one of the fastest teams that we’ve seen (and) that we’re going to see and probably one of the stronger teams that we’re going to see,” Bell said. “I’m preparing my boys for a physical game and to be ready to get up and down the court on offense and defense.”

Chinook’s start at the Northern ‘B’ Boys tournament begins on Thursday with a 6:30pm tipoff from Malta against the Mustangs. The winner of that game will be playing Friday around 8pm and the loser is set to face the loser of Fairview-Cut Bank on Friday around 2:30pm that same day.
