It was a disappointing end to the Chinook Lady Sugarbeeters’ 2023-24 basketball campaign as the team went all the way to the state tournament before bowing out with two losses. Now, the page is turned and a new season is here. New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Mike Seymour, who put together a summer retrospective of what his girls accomplished before they hit the ground running.
“I tell you, I was very happy with the summer that we had,” Seymour said. “We went to quite a few tournaments. We got close to 22 basketball games in over the summer.”
“We had some girls step into some roles that they’re capable of filling,” Seymour continued. “I’m very excited to watch to see what kind of team we put on the floor each night.”
“Our girls are excited. They come to practice with a lot of energy and excitement and enthusiasm,” Seymour said.
Seymour said what his team will look like for the coming year and how he has viewed the first set of practices so far.
“(Senior point guard) Alexus (Seymour) and (senior forward) Hannah (Schoen) were both All-Conference last year,” Seymour said. “I’ve also got two quality seniors that have been with us for quite a while a while in Addison Olsen and Gracie Skoyen.”
“I except some things to come out of our juniors in Brooke Fetter, Neva Lowe, (and) Kirbey Hofeldt,” Seymour continued. “A sophomore, Sidney Liddle, should be able to step in and give us some time as well.”
Chinook will open its season right away with a conference game in Cut Bank. Coach Seymour said what he will be looking for as his team takes the court against someone other than themselves.
“That’s something we’re looking forward to finding out,” Seymour said. “After game one, we’re going to have to evaluate each individual player.”
“Where they’re fitting into their role, can we expand a role or two?” Seymour continued. “Those are things that you continue to work on throughout the season.”
The tip-off between Chinook and Cut Bank will be on Friday night with the girls’ following the boys’ around 7:30pm. Listen to the game on KRYK 101.3FM and HiLineToday.com.
