FDA Warns Against Use of Smartwatches, Smart Rings for Measuring Blood Glucose Levels

Written by Kelly Korsbeck

(US FDA) – The US Food and Drug Administration has warned of risks related to smartwatches and smart rings use to monitor blood glucose levels without piercing the skin.

These devices are not authorized or approved to measure glucose values, as opposed to skin piercing devices. Using smart devices may provide inaccurate readings, resulting in management errors, such as incorrect insulin dosage, sulfonylureas or other glucose lowering medication. Too much medication may result in dangerously low glucose leading to mental confusion, coma, or possibly death within hours.

Consumers are advised that the safety and effectiveness of such devices has not been reviewed by the FDA. Speak with your health care provider about appropriate devices authorized by the FDA.
