Havre Softball Sweeps Second Day of LaVerne Tournament

The cliché is that a team needs to be playing its best heading into the playoffs. That moniker is exactly where Havre fast pitch softball is right now. The Ponies completed a perfect campaign at the LaVerne Tournament in Butte by beating two formidable opponents on Saturday: Corvallis in a (10-2) five-inning performance and Frenchtown, (4-1) in six innings.

Game one was the Elle Verploegen show as she continued her momentum from Friday’s play, single-handedly leading Havre to the victory. Her pitching line was two runs on seven hits with another double-digit strikeout performance of 12. She also led the team with three hits at the plate, two of which were doubles. Catcher Camille Keeley also recorded two doubles and drove in two runs. The team recorded 12 hits in the contest and were up (7-0) before the Blue Devils got their first run.

In game two, Havre jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Keeley went yard for her fourth home run of the season, which was a two-run shot. The third inning was memorable for Verploegen, who completed an immaculate inning, throwing three straight strikeouts on nine pitches in the frame. She finished with another 12 strikeouts. In the four-game total of the LaVerne Tournament, Verploegen (14-3, 2.596 ERA) punched out 36 batters. After the Lady Broncs scored a run in the fourth inning, Keeley hit her second home run of the game in the fifth, a solo home run, which expanded the Havre lead and would ultimately be the final score.

The Blue Ponies (15-6) will ride this momentum into the Eastern ‘A’ Divisional Tournament, which is set to begin next Friday in Lewistown.
