The Havre Track and Field squads haven’t batted an eye since the start of the season, placing in the top-2 in every meet that the school has entered. It’s a six-meet win streak for the Havre girls’ as well. Head coach Kari Filius talked to New Media Broadcasters about the most recent wrap up, which was the Havre Lions Meet. She shared details on how her individuals prepared so well earlier that week, which led to the first-place finishes for the Blue Ponies.
“The seniors were excited to perform for everyone and it was a beautiful day,” Filius said. “They did a good job getting ready for that meet.”
“The kids really had a good time and competed well,” Filius continued. “Both the boys’ and girls’ came out on top, so that was nice.”
The final regular season meet will take place in Polson on Saturday. Coach Filius anticipates stiffer competition, especially because there is a lot of uncertainty given that Havre has not seen many of the schools that are entered into this meet. She did talk up her squads and said they definitely belong amongst the best and that is what will be on tap for this weekend.
“This is a really big meet for us,” Filius said. “We’re seeing almost every team from the west. We haven’t seen much of that.”
“There’s a lot of good teams over there. We’re one of the good teams and we’re going to join them,” Filius continued. “We’ll fine tune our relay handoffs, our competitiveness, (and) mental toughness.”
There is one last wrinkle in the Nelson-Thomas ABC Meet: there are still a handful of competitors who are looking to qualify for divisionals. Coach Filius said her biggest goal this week besides preserving the freshness of her individuals is eyeing those who have yet to make the divisionals competition field. She explained how that all works.
“We have a few kids that are trying to earn their spot at divisionals still,” Filius said. “You have to be top-30 in your event to go to divisionals.”
“We have some kids that are trying one more time and we are going to bring them along,” Filius continued. “It’ll be a good meet (and) good for us to see that side of the state before state and we’re looking forward to it.”
Filius and the Blue Ponies will travel down to Polson for the Nelson-Thomas ABC Meet and New Media Broadcasters will have results once they become available following the conclusion of Saturday’s meet.
