HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – On Tuesday morning, Krystal Steinmetz officially announced her candidacy to replace Jacob Bachmeier to represent House District 28.
The news comes after Bachmeier announced he would not seek re-election on Sunday, and would also be relinquishing his role as Hill County Democratic Chair, effective March 15.
Steinmetz, also a Democrat, is currently the marketing and events director for the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line. She was previously Director of Community Planning at Bear Paw Development.
Bachmeier, who endorsed Steinmetz on Tuesday, says she is the right person to represent Havre in Helena.
“I think Krystal will do an incredible job. She’s got a great personality, she’s got a great record of public and private service here in Hill County. I just think she’ll do an incredible job running for my House seat.”
Bachmeier was 18-years-old when he was originally elected back in 2016, and is still the youngest member of the Montana State Legislature. He says his decision to step away from holding political office is in large part due to other obligations, as he is also a student at MSU-Northern and works a salaried postion at Big Sky 55+.
“It feels like I’m working 80 to 100 hours a week. It has just been really intense over the last 3 or 4 years. What I’m realizing is that as time is going on, I’m only getting more busy. It’s making my job as legislator harder.”
As of Tuesday morning, no other candidates have filed for House District 28.
