MISSOULA, Mont. (NMB) – Ballot initiatives regarding the taxing and sale of medical and recreational marijuana saw mixed results this year in Montana.
The Billings Gazette reports that Billings voters rejected a proposal to allow recreational marijuana storefronts and dispensaries within city limits.
Yellowstone County voters approved a three percent local tax on both recreational and medical marijuana sales.
The Missoulian reports that Missoula County voters also overwhelmingly approved a three percent local tax on recreational marijuana, but voted down the tax for medical marijuana by about three percentage points.
The state will be putting a 20 percent tax on the sale of recreational marijuana, and local governments have the option of assessing an additional three percent tax.
The taxes will go into effect on January 1st, the same day recreational marijuana can start being sold in Montana.
