The MSU Northern basketball teams squared off against Dickinson State Saturday evening, in day two of the Sam Milanovich Classic in Dickinson, ND.
The Skylights led the set off, and kept even with the Blue Hawks, tied at 14 after a quarter. Northern kept pressing, to take a 33-27 lead into locker room. Another close third session saw the Skylights lead by 9 into the final stanza. Dickinson State kept it close, but were unable to generate any field goals late, giving the Skylights a 61-58 victory.
Shyan Krass led the charge with 12 points, with Canzas HisBadHorse and Savannah Toms contributing 10 points each to the win.
The men’s game immediately followed, where the Blue Hawks opened on a 10-0 run. The Lights battled back to within 4 with help from the bench, but Dickinson surged to close the half up 36-27. Fighting back in the second half, the Lights climbed to a 5-point deficit, before Dickinson hit some difficult shots toward the game’s end, and claiming the 73-66 win.
Northern’s scoring was headed up by Anthony Mendez with 14 points. Cinque Maxwell added 13, while Leon Sayers IV also had double digits with 11.
The Northern women are now 4-3 on the young season, while the Lights sit at 1-6, looking to turn things around on Fri., Dec. 6, when they host the University of Jamestown. Game time is set for 6pm. Both teams return to the Armory Gym on Sat., Dec. 7, to host Saint Mary’s University. Skylights take the court at 1pm, followed by the Lights around 3pm.
