Northstars Building Momentum of off Mother’s Day Sweep

The Havre Northstars picked up their first wins of 2024 on Sunday over conference rival Lewistown. New Media Broadcasters spoke to head coach Patch Wirtzberger about the sweep and he was welcomed by the burst of offense in the first game and how well his pitching did through both contests. He also had a message for his team about taking advantage of getting on base as many times as they did during the first game.

“We got the bats going a little bit in game one.” Wirtzberger said. “11 hits (is) a good start in (the third game of the season) against a really good pitcher and we were able to push some runs across.”

“We’d like to get a little bit more efficient,” Wirtzberger continued. “When you have 11 hits, you’d like to be somewhere near double-digit runs, but our pitching and defense came through when we really needed it.”

“In the second game, we just battled through and found ways to score a couple of runs,” Wirtzberger said. “Overall, (I was) pretty pleased and a lot of good things to build off of.”

There will be a quick turnaround on the schedule and it won’t be easy. The Northstars will have to come across the Great Falls Chargers, the team that beat them twice to open the season. Coach Wirtzberger used one word consistently to invoke his feelings about how to get over the hump this time around.

“I just think we need to play with confidence,” Wirtzberger said. “We just need to believe that we belong on the same field as these guys.”

“We need to take the field with confidence, hit with confidence, pitch with confidence, and just really believe that we can play with these guys and we can beat them,” Wirtzberger continued. “The last few games, we got the first couple game jitters out and hopefully we can get there and play really well.”

The Northstars’ latest contest with the Chargers is scheduled for 6:30pm in Great Falls on Wednesday and New Media Broadcasters will have a recap once the game goes to a final.
