On Saturday night, the Havre Northstars played the Lethbridge Miners in the first home contests since the beginning of June. The final scores were a (4-3) loss and (3-2) win, respectively.
In the first game, Lethbridge got on the board to start the contest. The teams traded zeros for a while on the scoreboard, but Havre finally broke through in the fourth inning as Chason Mader singled in Terek Shipp to tie the game at one. The Northstars would use patience to engineer the second run as four batters came up to provide scenarios of a bases-loaded walk by Colter Solomon.
The lead didn’t last long for the home team as the Miners used two fielder’s choices in the fifth inning and scored an insurance run on the next batter. Havre had a chance to do damage in the later innings, pushing across one run in the sixth inning, but having another bases-loaded chance stall out due to a double play before going quietly in the seventh.
Game two saw the Northstars open the scoring this time around, drawing two walks and hitting back-to-back singles, the latter of which brought home Tyson Brandon courtesy of Jevin Jenkins. Lethbridge countered by retaking the lead on an error in the second inning, which scored two runs. Back and forth the contest went as the third inning provided more offense for Havre as Quinn Elliot doubled in Tanner Delarosa and Solomon.
Shipp picked up his team-high fourth win of the season on the mound, keeping the Miners off the board when it mattered the most. He allowed the tying run on second and the winning run on first in the sixth and was able to strike out the side. In the seventh, he surrendered a leadoff single, but came back for his seventh strikeout of the game and got the second out on a fielder’s choice before Elliot came in to record the final out on strikes.
Havre has one more doubleheader on Sunday, taking on the Fort Macleod Royals with a 1pm from American Legion Park.
