Northstars Sweep Redbirds for First Wins of 2024

The gray weather dawned over Havre for another baseball Sunday. However, the Northstars did not play like it. Through the smoke coming down from the fires in Canada, they swept conference rival Lewistown, (5-1) in the first game and (2-1) in game two.

Havre scored its first run of the season in the first inning of the first game as second baseman Tyson Brandon singled in Terek Shipp. The teams traded zeroes into the fourth inning and the Redbirds answered with an RBI double of their own.

Havre was able to meet the moment in the fifth inning. Shortstop Ezra Pyle scored on a passed ball to break the tie. On the very next pitch, designated hitter Jevin Jenkins clubbed his first home run of the season over the left field wall to break the game open for the Northstars, (4-1). Center Fielder Colter Solomon was able to add another insurance run by drawing a bases loaded walk in the next inning to seal the game.

Tanner Delarosa carried momentum from his pitching outing last Sunday into this start, firing 5.1 innings while allowing the one run and striking out four Redbirds. Shipp came in to close the door in the sixth inning by getting the final two outs via strikeout. The Northstars combined for 11 hits as a team in the first win.

Much like game one, game two provided to be a tight affair, except this time throughout the contest. Like game one, Havre jumped out to the early lead, getting a fielder’s choice by Jenkins in the first inning and an RBI single from Brandon in the third, which scored Solomon. Lewistown scored the very next half inning on a sacrifice bunt that plated a runner.

From there, it was a pitcher’s dual as Quinn Elliot got the start, throwing five innings and striking out four batters and only walking one Redbird. Solomon came in and capped off his day with two innings of shutout ball on the mound, striking out three, including two out of three batters to close out the game on his way to the save.

Havre is now (2-2) on the young season and will have a busy week coming up, starting with the next game down in Great Falls to play the Chargers on Wednesday.
