(Havre) The Hi-Line is experiencing some of the lowest temperatures this season during the weekend, and what the National Weather Service had originally forecast as a moderate risk to public safety is now listed as extreme.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with Ian Gesell, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, to get more details on the change in risk level and what that means for the public.
“The risk went from moderate to extreme because the models haven’t really been handling the cold temperatures very well, and so it’s going to be a bit more cold than what was originally forecast. So for the Havre area, you’re going to get air temperatures around -45, pushing -50, and windchill, even thought the wind will be fairly light, -60 possibly even approaching -70 in some areas. What this really means for people is, they really shouldn’t be traveling at all. If they are traveling, they need to be wearing at least three to five layers if not more”
