The MSU-Northern cross-country team announced the signing of Carter Campbell on Tuesday afternoon. Campbell, a local product out of Rudyard, starred at North Star High school, where he played basketball and also ran in track.
“I’m very excited that Carter is joining our running team,” Cross Country coach Deborah Callahan said in a press release. “He has a great attitude, a(n) unbelievable work ethic and understands the importance of academics.”
“Carter’s passion for teamwork showed his athleticism to participation in multi(ple) events which helped take the North Star Boys’ team to a second-place finish at the 2024 District track meet,” Callahan continued.
His PRs in high school were as follows: 2:04 for an 800-meter race, 4:47 in the 1600, and a 10:47 3200. Training for the 800 meters earned him a fifth-place finish at the MHSA State Class ‘C’ meet during the 2023 season.
Campbell has been mentored by his dad, Brian, who is North Star’s AD and has had a multitude of coaching roles at the school in addition to his teaching job.
“Carter had been by me side with the track team since he could walk,” Brian Campbell said in the press release. “The transition father-son to coach-athlete was easy.”
Carter said he chose Northern because he wanted to be close to home and still be able to compete competitively in athletics. Campbell will be a Wildlife Biology major and will also add to the Lights’ distance track program.
