HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – The Centers for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, and local health departments are investigating a large outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to consumption of onions.
As of Wednesday, Montana reported 52 cases and 12 hospitalizations linked to the outbreak.
Two of the cases are in Hill County, two are in Fergus County and nine are in Cascade County.
Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield, California is recalling red, yellow, white and sweet yellow onions shipped since May 1st, 2020.
Consumers are advised not to eat onions supplied by Thomson International Inc. Throw away onions with this supplier information, or if you do not know where the onions came from.
Wash and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with these onions or their packaging.
A representative from Gary & Leo’s IGA told New Media Broadcasters Thursday morning that they did not sell the onions behind the outbreak. However, any concerned customers may return onions bought from their store for a full refund.
A representative from Walmart says the onions were sold at their Havre location. However, they took the onions off the shelves immediately after a product recall was issued.
Anyone that bought the recalled onions at Walmart is asked to dispose of them, and can bring in a receipt to the store for a refund.
