2024 Bear Paw Roundup PRCA Rodeo Preview

The two-night Bear Paw Roundup PRCA Rodeo gets going at the Blaine County Fair in Chinook on Thursday night. New Media Broadcasters got to talk with Dennis Kleinjan, the president of the committee that puts on the rodeo. In addition to mutton bustin’ happening on both nights, Kleinjan broke down the first night of the rodeo special events.

“Thursday, we do the ‘Monkey on a Rope’. People just love it,” Kleinjan said. “Two people ride down and one hangs on a rope. They run back around the barrel and down and pick the person that swinging around there and get back to the timer line. That’s been a big get over the years.”

“We’ve got a specialty act,” Kleinjan continued. “Tomas Garcilazo (is) a many-time trick roping act of the year. He’s a big name coming and we’re pretty lucky to get him this year.”

“(Stock Contractor J Bar J’s) Sparky (Dreesen’s) famous saddle bronc rider ‘Painted Commotion’ I think is going to be here Thursday night,” Kleinjan said. “We’re pretty pleased to get that horse in Chinook, Montana.”

For the second night of the rodeo, there will be outhouse races that headline the show. Kleinjan made the case for fans to come out support the rodeo both nights.

“The outhouse races get pretty wild,” Kleinjan said. “We steal some people and tip some outhouses over and have a good time.”

“All the contestant numbers (for the rodeo) are up,” Kleinjan continued. “We’ve got a huge slack Friday (at 9am). Good numbers (and) we’ve got full sheets both nights. It’s just going to be a great show.”

“Then, there’s a concert afterwards both nights,” Kleinjan said. “After the rodeo, stick around and dance and have a good time.”

The Bear Paw Roundup PRCA Rodeo gets going on Thursday night and will also run on Friday night. Each show begins at 7pm. There will be musical acts after each performance with the Whiskey River Band on Thursday night and Chisholm taking center stage on Friday night.
