BOX ELDER, Mont. (NMB) – The 55th annual Rocky Boy Celebration will kick off on Thursday with a Youth Pow Wow and on Friday with the main events. President of the Pow Wow Committee Caryn Sangrey says their Grand Entry times will be at 7 PM on Friday, at noon and 6 PM on Saturday, and at 1 PM on Sunday.
“We have a singing contest going on. We have some Smoke Dancers and some Eastern Woodland Dancers that come from as far as New York. We usually get about around 1,000 dancers, registered and non-registered. And they come up from across the United States and from Canada to come and dance at our Pow Wow.”
Sangrey says they will begin Friday morning with their annual Sobriety Walk.
“And that has been a tradition here for at least 25 years, that we’ve been kicking off our celebration weekend with our Sobriety Walk. That commences 8 o’clock. We start here at the main agency ground and we, the Sobriety Walk, ends at the Pow Wow Grounds, so it’s a three-mile walk.”
Sangrey says all the events will be at the Pow Wow grounds on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation. She says that they are expecting around 1,000 dancers and their families, which creates an economic boom in the area.
