JOLIET, Mont. (NMB) – The Billings Gazette reports that Carbon County Commissioners have approved language for a ballot initiative that would fund a new jail near Joliet.
On August 3rd, Carbon County voters will decide whether to commit to bonding for the $53 million project. If approved, voters would then be asked to approve a mill levy to fund the estimate $2 million in annual operation costs.
Carbon County has been without a Detention Center since 2001 when the jail in Red Lodge closed. This means that all Carbon County inmates have to be transported to another county.
