Governor Signs Bill Repealing Local-Option Gas Tax

HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – Montana Governor Greg Gianforte has announced the signing of House Bill 464 into law, overturning any current local-option gas tax and preventing local governments from taxing gas sales with voter approval.

The bill’s signing officially overturns Missoula County’s gas tax, which had been in effect since September.

It was projected to produce $1.2 million in revenue for infrastructure projects. Now, local leaders say they may need to increase property taxes to make up for the lost funds.

House Bill 464 was sponsored by Rep. Matt Regier and made it through the legislature with mostly Republican support, although a handful of Democrats voted for the measure.
