Suit Filed Over Ballot Collection Laws

HELENA Mont. (NMB) – The ACLU, Native American Rights Fund, and several Montana-based Tribes are among those that have filed suit against the state in an attempt to prevent two newly signed election laws from taking effect.

The suit is over House Bill 176, which ended same-day voter registration. as well as House Bill 530, which bans the collection and submission of other’s ballots if any financial compensation is involved.

Supporters of the measures argue they increase ballot security, while opponents claim that it creates unnecessary obstacles for voters, especially those in rural areas.

The laws were recently signed by Governor Greg Gianforte after passing the legislature and being transmitted by Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen.
