
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees convened on Thursday evening for a reorganization meeting.
The meeting started with the winners of the recent election being sworn in, including new Trustees Britnee’ Loch and Jake Ingram.
Curtis Smeby was appointed as Chair of the Board by a 7-1 vote. Ingram provided the only dissenting vote. The only other Trustee nominated was Cindy Erickson, but she declined the nomination before any vote. Smeby replaces Aileen Couch who did not run for re-election, as Chair of the Board.
Theresa Miller was appointed as the Vice-Chair of the Board by a 5-3 vote. Loch, Ingram, and Tim Scheele cast the dissenting votes. Scheele was the other Trustee nominated for Vice-Chair, but Miller’s nomination was approved before Scheele’s nomination went up for a vote. Miller replaces Harvey Capellen, who did not run for re-election, as Vice-Chair of the Board.
Shanna Flores was appointed as District Clerk for the 2021-22 school year by a unanimous 8-0 vote.
Tim Scheele was appointed unanimously as a representative for the elementary districts on the Hill County Transportation Committee. The Committee meets throughout the year to approve bus routes and other transportation issues that affect Hill County School Districts. Harvey Capellen was the previous Trustee serving in this role, but he no longer serves on the School Board.
Lorraine Larson was appointed by unanimous vote to serve on the Havre Public Schools Education Foundation Board of Directors. Aileen Couch was the previous Trustee on the Board of Directors, but she no longer serves on the School Board.
Other action/announcements from the meeting:
- Approval of the Trustee Activity Calendar for the 2021-22 School Year
- Approval of the School Member Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics was then signed by all current Trustees
- Kris Goss of the Montana School Boards Association provided a one hour board member training
- Mueller says they interviewed a candidate for the Curriculum Director/Human Resources position with the District on Monday and offered them the job on Tuesday. However, the candidate declined the job. This was the second candidate they’ve interviewed that has declined the position, and Mueller says they may consider separating the positions into two different jobs
The Board of Trustees will next convene at 6 PM on Tuesday, May 25th for a Special Meeting. A Board Planning meeting will follow the Special Meeting. No action can be taken during planning meetings.
