HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – For the ninth time since the pandemic began, Community Alliance Church in Havre partnered with the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box Program to provide free food to anyone interested, with no eligibility requirements.
Pastor Munya Takawira says the giveaway this past Tuesday was their most successful to date, with over 35,000 pounds of food provided and a line cars stretching for well over a mile.
“We were told the line stretched for 2.5 miles. We had people come from not just Havre. Some say they came 50 miles to get food boxes. And then we also have some food boxes…it flowed very well. Havre Police did a great job of just maintaining order and directing traffic, so it helped make the process more effective. And it could not have been done without the volunteers.”
However, the future of the program is in doubt, with the USDA saying it has been put on hold on grounds of “termination for the government’s convenience.”
Even with that news, Takawira says they will continue to find ways to serve the community.
“There will always be something. We will always be in the community, because we believe that’s what we’re called to do.”
