University of Montana Breaks Ground on New Power Facility

MISSOULA, Mont. (NMB) – The University of Montana has announced that construction has begun on a new combined heat and power facility that will provide electricity and steam to its buildings.

A press release says the facility will save the University up to $2 million annually in reduced energy expenses. They say the savings will be invested back into student-facing infrastructure, such as new classrooms and upgraded labs.

The facility will generate up to five megawatts with two natural gas turbines and a steam turbine.

The existing steam plant includes three boilers that date back to the 1960s and generate electricity and heat, but to a smaller degree than the new plant.
