HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – During the public comment portion of Tuesday’s Havre School Board meeting, High School Football Coach Ryan Gatch and several of his supporters spoke out against the process that led to his contract not being renewed.
Gatch says he has been given one year contracts annually, but administration recently decided he would not receive another renewal.
“There is no chance for rebuttal. No chance to retain that position. And no chance for me to continue to make a difference in these students’ lives when it comes to our football program.”
Board Chair Curtis Smeby cut off speakers numerous times during public comment, saying that personnel matters cannot be discussed at the meeting, per board policy.
Smeby closed the public comment portion of the meeting by thanking staff for their work in the District.
“Mr. Gatch still works for the District. This isn’t about his teaching contract or anything like that. That’s much different. Obviously, this is emotional. Of course it is. Coaching is emotional, working with young men and women is an important component of High School. And we do a great job with that. Everyone needs to be commended. Can we do better jobs? Well, of course we can. And I appreciate what has been done and what we’re doing. And thank you for attending.”
Gatch remains on staff at the District as a PE teacher.
