HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – A Harlem woman was arrested on Tuesday night in Havre after allegedly getting into a crash with a stolen car.
Havre Police Captain Aaron Wittmer says at 7:03 PM, they received calls from several individuals reporting a crash involving a Chevy Malibu and Ford F150 near the intersection of 14th Avenue and 1st Street.
One minute later, an individual at the Magic Diamond Casino reported their vehicle had been stolen.
Officers responded to the crash and noticed that the Malibu was one of the vehicles involved.
Wittmer says the driver of the Malibu failed to stop when it reached the end of an alley between the 1400 block of 2nd and 3rd Street, and hit a southbound F150 that was driving on 14th Avenue. Both vehicles were rendered inoperable and needed to be towed.
The alleged driver of the Malibu, 30-year-old Ashley Jane Smith of Harlem, was transported to Northern Montana Hospital for treatment.
However, Wittmer says she became disorderly and refused treatment. She was released from the hospital and was arrested. She appeared to be under the influence and failed a field sobriety test.
Smith faces the pending felony charge of motor vehicle theft and the misdemeanors of driving under the influence, driving without a license, obstructing a Peace Officer, reckless driving (traffic crime), failure to remain at an accident, and failure to stop when emerging from an alleyway.
