HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Living History Day returns to Havre this Saturday, and two iconic historic sites are holding events to commemorate the occasion.
From 9 AM-4 PM, Beneath the Streets will be hosting tours with a special $8 rate, and live actors will be performing for the first time in three years.
“They are volunteering a good portion of their Saturday to come hang out with us, and we greatly appreciate the volunteers that come out. We’ve got some that have come every year to hang out with us, and we’ve got some new ones that are onboard this year as well. We just can’t thank them enough. This would not happen without the volunteers coming in and being in those displays and having it come to life, so to speak” says Office Manager Christy Owens.
There will also be a special run of trains at the adjoining Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum. Tour attendees will have the chance to try samples of things such as ice cream and sausages as well.
Meanwhile, there will also be an event at Fort Assiniboine.
From 10 AM-3 PM, a full slate of educational activities is planned, including discounted Black Jack Wagon tours, which will showcase sites such as a historic Bachelor Officer Quarters apartment.
“After the Fort closed, the Northern Ag Research Center took that apartment over and actually split it into two apartments for their employees and their families. It hasn’t been remodeled yet, so it requires some explanation as to what you’re looking at, but they were very elegant apartments. There was a servant girl and her quarters, and they are all part of the apartments. We’ve only had that open part of last year and then this year. It will be one of our next improvement projects, to turn that apartment back into its original condition. That should be a pretty exciting tourist attraction once it is finished,” says Fort Assiniboine Preservation Association Chairman Ron VandenBoom.
A free will lunch of pulled pork, chips, beans and soft drinks will be served, and members of the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club will be showcasing antique weaponry.
