HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Three people were hospitalized on Sunday morning after the vehicle they were in crashed into a tree in the Duck Inn parking lot in Havre.
Havre Police Captain Aaron Wittmer says they were dispatched to the incident at 8:01 AM Sunday morning after receiving multiple 911 calls of an injury crash.
Wittmer says witnesses stated a male was driving a Ford Explorer out of the Emporium parking lot and headed westbound on 1st Street when he is believed to have a medical event. The vehicle accelerated rapidly across 1st Street and struck a large pine tree while traveling an estimated 40-50 miles an hour.
None of the three occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts, and once they were freed they were transported to Northern Montana Hospital. The female passenger was then flown to Great Falls, with injuries that included a broken leg and lacerations.
The two male occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Wittmer says the occupants appeared to have been drinking and there were open containers and/or empty cans in the vehicle.
A DUI investigation is ongoing, Wittmer says, as they are awaiting on blood results. No charges have been filed as of yet.
The vehicle was totaled and the tree was badly damaged.
The Havre Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 8:02 AM and sent 1 engine and 2 ambulances. They transported the three occupants to the hospital.
