HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees convened on Tuesday evening for their regular monthly meeting and voted to approve a variety of agenda items.
Included among the approved items was a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line to create after-school programming for youth in grades K-1 at Highland Park for the 2022-23 school year.
The cost to the district is $41,414, which is a a one-time contribution of half the estimated operating budget. In the next planning phase, the Boys & Girls Club would fully take over the funding of the program.
“I am excited about the opportunity that this could extend to our students. And I think it only speaks to what we can continue to offer to our community in the form of after-school programs for our students,” said Superintendent Craig Muller.
Supervising and staffing would be provided by the Boys & Girls Club.
“This is something we’ve been talking about for years,” said Hi-Line Boys & Girls Club President Tim Brurud. “When we look at the children we serve, our K-1 kids, they just kind of need a bit of a different set-up … Sometimes that K-1 set needs a little more structure, so this has been a solution we’ve been looking at for a long time. We would take those kids that we’re currently serving at the club and serve them at Highland Park.”
The plan is for 60 youth a day to be served from the end of the school day until 6 PM. Children will have a meal at 3 PM and a snack later in the day. The students will be separated into four groups and will spend their time participating in educational, recreational, and youth development activities.
“(This will) relieve a little bit of pressure on our (club location), which has kind of been capped off for the last couple years, and also help improve some of the transportation issues with kids that age,” said Brurud.
Other items approved on Tuesday by the Board:
- Approval of revisions to High School, Middle School, and Elementary Handbooks for 2022-23.
- Approval of Revisions Policies 3416 and 3416F1 on 2nd and final reading. These policies deal with the administering of medication to students. 3416F specifically deals with Glucagon.
- Approval of Revisions to Policy 2600P and 2600F on 2nd and final reading. These policy revisions outline insurance options for the Work Based Learning Program, which are to be agreed upon between the district and the employer.
- Approval of the technology curriculum.
- Approval of the district’s membership with the Montana School Board Association for the 2022-23 school year at a cost of $11,234, which is the down slightly from the $11,412 rate last year.
- Approval of payment of Montana High School Association 2022-23 membership dues. These are $250 per activity, so for Havre’s 20 activities, that totals $5,000. They are also paying $836 for required catastrophic insurance and $191 to participated in the concussion insurance plan.
- Approval of increased wages for summer short term employees
- Approval of a request for the High School Boys Basketball team to participate in a team camp at Gonzaga in a few weeks. This is being funded through fundraising dollars.
