The MSU-N wrestling team has been productive over the course of the last week. The team lost its first dual of the season when Providence came into the Armory Gym and beat them.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Tyson Thivierge said that the early season jitters played a part in the results against Providence, but also said that turning the page just a few days after was what was needed.
“We just let the environment get to us,” Thivierge said. “We were short-handed in the lighter weights, but we are back to full strength now.”
“We were in matches,” Thivierge continued. “The matches that were close got away from us. We let our nerves get to us and I know it’s early in the year and those are things that we can easily fix.”
The Lights hit the road a few days after the Providence dual and went to Des Moines, IA for the Grand View Open, where they had placers in different weight classes, most notably redshirt senior NaKoda Siegel taking first place overall in the 174 lb category, while redshirt junior Devin Crawford placed fourth at 165 pounds and sophomore Austin Vanek scored fifth place in the 184 lb class.
“We had a good showing in Grand View,” Thivierge said. “I wish we had more placers, but (it was a h)igh level of competition. I can’t complain about how we competed.”
The Lights will be practicing all week in preparation for the Spokane Open in Washington. This will be an all-day event on Sunday and coach Thivierge gives New Media Broadcasters listeners a taste of what he will say to his team this week.
“We want to score bonus points in every match,” Thivierge said. “We don’t want to sit on leads. We want to go out there and perform for seven minutes (each time) and just keep building each period.”
