Havre, MT – Unlike many other high school sports, golf presents unique offseason challenges, with much of player’s development depending on their own initiative and commitment to improving outside of organized team activities.
Havre High Golf coach Dennis Murphy spoke with NMB Sports about the challenges that come with not having a dedicated facility.
“The biggest challenge of golf is that you don’t own your own facility like a basketball coach does. They have the Havre high school, and the football team has the football field.”
“We rely on anther facility that people have to come to. To get them here and them make a commitment to it, and obviously there’s some sort of financial commitment to make to be able to play in the summer.”
Murphy also discussed another offseason challenge, especially during Montana’s warmer months.
“In the summer sometimes, the kids like to be outside and enjoy things and sometimes they don’t want to come to the golf course, and I understand that they want to be at the lake.”
Despite those challenges, Murphy knows the golfers who consistently dedicate time to improving during the offseason will see the biggest gains once the season begins.
