(Chinook) The Hi-Line continues to bear some of it’s coldest temperatures this season, breaking record lows in some areas.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with Fred Hofman, Superintendent of Chinook Public Schools, to discuss how cold the temperatures will get before the school takes action.
(Hofman) “About a year ago we developed a guideline that we wanted to go by, and it’s based on the National Weather Services chart that just talks about what the wind chill is. If the air temperature is this and wind is this and how quickly you can get frost bite. So, we sorta use that to base a generic model or guidelines on when we decide we’re going to run busses or how long kids get to be out at recess. If a person can get frost bite in as little as ten minutes, then we’re not running our busses”
Hofman says that when this decision is made by the school, parents are more than welcome to still bring their child to school by car but it’s not required, students are excused from classes during those days.
