The Havre boys’ basketball team is still off to a (7-1) start to their season. The team did not appear in a game last week because of the frigid temperatures felt throughout the state of Montana. Their game against Dawson County did not take place, so head coach WaLynn Burgess told his team to take the weekend off.
“We have the boys a couple extra days (and) we talked about banking some extra hours off our feet right now,” Burgess said. “We felt like they used (the time off) well this weekend. A lot of rest and a lot of extra sleep.”
“We’re just using it as trying to get ahead of the game while we can,” Burgess continued. “It was unfortunate not to be able to play. You’ve just got to make the best of the situation if you can.”
Since there were no games on tap for the Blue Pony Boys’, coach Burgess decided to go support his alma mater, MSU-Northern and watch their basketball games last Thursday night. Burgess reminisced about his most recent visit and also shared why it is important for him to come back and watch the next generation of Lights light up the Armory gym.
“It’s been one of my favorite things (to stay) around (in Havre) after I got done with college,” Burgess said. “I kind of took it for granted, going to those college games (because) I moved away when I was out coaching North Star. I didn’t get to watch a game for four years. I was always on the road and had stuff to do.”
“Seeing a long line of Coach (Shawn) Huse’s teams, it’s been 16 years since I’ve been done but it’s just crazy because they still play fairly similar,” Burgess continued. “Still being able to be around them and the program, it’s something pretty dang cool that not a lot of people get to say that they get to do.”
Havre has two games this week at the Blue Pony Corral: against Fergus on Thursday and against Sidney on Friday. Stay tuned to New Media Broadcasters later this week for coach Burgess’ thoughts on the two teams they have on the docket.
