Havre Northstars Return With Tryouts

It’s that time of the year where the snow begins to melt until late fall and spring has sprung. There is no better indication of that here in town than right up the road at American Legion Park, where the Havre Northstars play baseball.

New Media Broadcasters had the chance to speak with Patch Wirtzberger and he said he was able to reflect on the 2023 team, which hosted the Northwest Regional for the first time ever and had the most wins in program history.

“I took some time to reflect and go back and think about the season,” Wirtzberger said. “There’s a whole lot to be proud of with the team from 2023.”

“First district championship since 2005, most conference wins in a season since 2004, playing in the regional tournament for the first time since 1999 and hosting it,” Wirtzberger continued. “(I’m) very proud of that group and what they were able to accomplish.”

The 2024 Northstars roster will be shaping up shortly because of tryouts that will be held this week. Coach Wirtzberger shared how the process will go for filling out the team and what the recipe for success has been dating back to his first year on staff in 2018 before being elevated to head coach for the 2019 season.

“We want to get some measurables; how fast they can run, get their timing on their throws, run them through a series of drills so that we can evaluate their skills,” Wirtzberger said. “If the weather holds out, hopefully (we can) do a live session so we can really see what happens when you put them in game situations.”

Havre Northstars baseball team tryouts will be held Monday through Wednesday. Stay tuned all season long for coverage of the Havre Northstars on New Media Broadcasters.
