The Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited is set to host the 2024 Fresno Challenge at the reservoir this weekend. New Media Broadcasters talked with Josh Parrow, the tournament director for the festivities. He had details about a change in this year’s tournament.
“We are now going to a catch photo release,” Parrow said. “People can get the fish released right away and hope to help for the better life of the fish.”
“(The participants) are required to use a digital camera with an SD card,” Parrow continued. “They will take pictures of their five best fish for the day and they will turn in that SD card at the end of the day. Officials will (then) go through the pictures of their fish.”
Something that was thought about before spring of 2022 and has gone into effect since then has been a separate age group for the fishing contest that provides opportunities for younger kids to get in on the action. A new wrinkle in this idea for 2024 is “mixed couple”. Parrow shared how that is being executed amongst the competitors in the field.
“We have an adult-child category and we actually split the categories now where we have 11 and under fishing in one category and 11 and older fishing in a different category,” Parrow said. “They can still win the tournament overall.”
“And then we also have mixed couple, which is usually just husband and wife,” Parrow continued. “But we do have quite a few teams this year that are actually dads fishing with their adult daughters. They also have the option to win the tournament overall and in their category.”
The 2024 Fresno Challenge will be taking place at Fresno Reservoir on Friday and Saturday.
