(Havre) The Hill County Board of Commissioners met on August 1st for their weekly business meeting.
The meeting began with an acknowledgement of accidental quorum that happened earlier that week, where the commissioners discussed with the Hill County Attorney’s office where district court would be held due to complications involving HVAC replacement in the Court House. Commissioner Peterson says the court will instead use the MSU Northern facilities.
The commission also approved a second appearance for a road mill resolution which has already failed once this year. This resolution would allow for up to 38 additional mills to be levied on Hill County taxpayers who pay road tax, which would mean Hingham and Havre residents would be excluded. A key change on this go around is the length of the resolution being 10 years, where previously it had an indefinite duration.
Hill County Clerk and Recorder Lexis Dockter remarked that failure of this resolution a second time would likely lead to worse roads and potential layoffs in the road department, as the potential dollars generated were this motion passed would serve to cover an expected deficit of over 600 thousand dollars.
In the resolution, it’s noted that the Hill County Road Department says they’re out of options; they say they’ve gathered as many funds on their own as “realistically possible” and have sought and found no additional avenues of funding.
This resolution, now that it’s approved, will be on the ballot for consideration in November during the general election for non-city Hill County residents.
