The MSU-Northern football team has been busy throughout the last few months, wrapping up recruiting and heading into fall camp. New Media Broadcasters got to catch up with Lights coach Jerome Souers and he unpacked what his team has been up to as the season comes up.
“We’ve come a long way. We’re going to look definitely different than we have,” Souers said. “We’re at the point now in fall camp where you’re only going to get so good until we start playing and we need to start playing to see where we’re really at.”
“I think our first game against Mayville on the road will test our will (and) our mental toughness,” Souers continued. “Being on the road this early with as many young guys as we have will be a challenge, but we’re excited to play. I like the energy on this team.”
The anticipation is over and the talk of the new-look Lights is finally going to take shape on Thursday. Coach Souers said he is excited to see what his team can do with a full 100-man roster. He also said how everything that the squad has been working for since the end of last season can come together and bring a new sense of optimism that hasn’t been seen with his program since the 2023 home opener against the very opponent they are going up against this week in Mayville State.
“Many guys we have doing this for the first time; they come out of high school last year that are going to be in the lineup,” Souers said. “There have to be some mistakes. I don’t expect perfect football, but what we expect is perfect effort; that we play hard and we keep our minds in the game and stay focused on what we are trying to do.”
“I’m anxious to see what our production looks like when we put together a defense and an offense that complement each other and a kicking game,” Souers continued.
The 2024 MSU-Northern football season opener against Mayville State kicks off this Thursday. KPQX-92.5FM and HiLineToday.com will have coverage from North Dakota beginning around 5pm.
