MSU-Northern wrestling traveled down to Great Falls to take on Providence in the first of two duals against the Argos this season. Wednesday night’s battles were hotly contested as Providence came out with a narrow (21-20) victory.
The Lights dropped their first four matches, but were able to get back into it with three straight wins on the mat. At 157 pounds, No. 22 Justin Windauer was able to just beat his opponent, (2-1), while Travis Waldner got a (3-1) upset decision at 165 pounds. No. 16 Devin Crawford continued his hot start to the season, wrestling to a technical fall at 174 pounds, (18-2).
No.7 Austin Vanek pinned his Argos counterpart at 197 pounds, while No. 19 Shane Mattson was a heavyweight champion on this night with a decision at 285 pounds, (4-1). It all came down to each team’s 184-pounder as No. 3 Rylin Burns and No. 3 Abel Nava Jr. matched up with Nava Jr. earning a (2-0) decision to have the Argos just squeak by the Lights.
Northern wrestling will be at the Grand View open in Des Moines, Iowa on Nov. 16.
