MSU-Northern wrestling is training on the mat once again after a Thanksgiving break off that saw the team return healthy. New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Tyson Thivierge about the upcoming schedule, which starts with one dual against Northwest College, which makes up the participation for the “Argo Duals”.
“Some of these programs coming in have been talking about how they’re banged up, so we’re fortunate enough to pick up a dual against one of our old foes,” Thivierge said. “We haven’t seen (them) in a while.”
“Then, we get the guys rested up for Saturday morning’s ‘Battle of the Rockies’,” Thivierge continued.
Coach Thivierge shared his thoughts on a single dual versus a day’s worth of wrestling and how the contrast has gotten the best of his team in the early going as they turn to the “Battle of the Rockies” on Saturday.
“We’ve kind of let ourselves down in a couple of duals,” Thivierge said. “(It’s) unfamiliar territory having a losing record, but this is an individual sport. This isn’t a team sport.”
“I think I’ve said it in the past: I’m not a huge fan of duals because it’s an individual sport,” Thivierge continued. “Tournaments is where I look for growth.”
“Prepping for one match is completely different than prepping for a day’s worth of wrestling,” Thivierge said. “(The Lights wrestlers) have to go through their process. They’ve got to figure it out. They’ve got to start winning some matches in duals.”
Friday’s bout with Northwest College is scheduled for Friday afternoon, while Saturday will be a marathon of match after match for Lights wrestling. Both days of competition will be held in Great Falls.
